KRISHNA MENON MEMORIAL GOVT. WOMEN’S COLLEGE

Krishna Menon Memorial Govt. Women’s College, named after the late V K Krishna Menon, the pride of Malabar and an illustrious son of the country is realization of a long – cherished dream, vision and hard work of the self less and service- minded citizens of Kannur. It is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education of North Malabar, exclusively for girls. The collge started functioning as a Junior College affiliated to Calicut University in 1975. 15 acres of land was acquired by the Government of Kerala in the jail compound at Pallikkunnu in the National Highway. The University of Calicut granted affiliation to the following Degree Courses.

1.B.A. Economics (Main) with modern Indian History and Political Science as subsidiary subjects.

2.B.A. History (Main) with General Economics and Political Science as subsidiary subjects.

In 1995 the college came under the jurisdiction of Kannur University. The first Post-Graduate course (M.A. English) was sanctioned in 2005-06. The commencement of the Post- Graduate course helped the College to achieve an enviable position in the academic map of North Malabar and Kannur University.

Another landmark in the history of the college was the recognitions of the Post-Graduate Department of English as s Research Centre by Kannur University in 2006. In 2012 Post- Graduate course in Development Economics was started.

The students of the college continue to reach enviable heights in sports at both national and international levels. A basketball court was inaugurated on 07.03.2010 which was a dream fulfilled.

The college has a well- equipped centralized library with over 40,000 books, 66 periodicals and several journals. It subscribes to national and regional newspapers. The College runs a subsidized canteen. The college provides instruction for the B.A/B.Sc Degree (Six Semesters) and M.A, M.Sc Degree (Four Semester) Programmes.

There are provisions for co-curricular and extracurriculat activites and scope for achieving a totality of experiences through such organization as nature club, book club, entrepreneur development club, tourism club, media club etc.. The alumnae and Parent-Teacher Associations are very active, providing necessary support for the welfare of the college. There is a Co-operative store in the college which provides text books, note books, records and all necessary stationery to students and teachers at moderate rates. The college staff club organizes programmes to foster the spirit of cordiality and creativity among the teachers.
