Mahatma Gandhi College, the institution in memory of the father of the nation, was established in the year 1948 by the legendary social reformer Padmabhooshan Bharatha Kesari Sri Mannathu Padmanabhan. It is one of the leading and oldest institution of higher education in the capital city of the state of Kerala run by the major educational agency of Kerala, the Nair Service Society (NSS). The college is accredited by NAAC with ‘B+’ Grade based on Revised Accreditation Framework (Third Cycle, CGPA-2.73) on November, 2018. The excellence shown by the institution in the realm of higher education was credited with the award of UGC’s prestigious status of ‘Colleges with Potential for Excellence’ in two consecutive terms in the year 2010 and 2016 respectively. Mahatma Gandhi College holds the pride of being one among the three colleges from Kerala and forty colleges from all over the country to qualify for the second phase of CPE status in 2016. The Department of Chemistry was initially selected for augmentation of Research & Development (SARD) by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment in the year 2006. The Department of Chemistry was selected for FIST programme of DST in 2007 and the Department of Physics in 2009. The college was selected for FIST in 2012 and all the PG Science departments are receiving financial assistance under this programme. The college was also selected for BSR assistance of UGC in 2009. The student community of the college is a cross section of the society. Majority of the students of the college are from socially and economically backward section of the society such as SC, ST, and OBCs. Moreover 65% of them are girl students. It is the responsibility of the college to provide high quality education for a broad range of students from different strata of the society.
Mahatma Gandhi College stretches over an area of 42.9 acres with a built in area of 8477.10 Sq.m the adjacent structures are fitness centre, cellar rooms, co-operative store, canteen, open-air auditorium, three security rooms etc. We have more than eighty two classrooms, twenty smart classrooms, research rooms, department staff rooms, laboratories, general library, department libraries, computer labs, auditorium, seminar halls, Principal’s office, administrative office, NCC, NSS and Yoga rooms and girl’s rest room. The campus has high speed Wi-Fi connectivity. The general library has 68141 books of 50,000 titles, periodicals and journals in English and Malayalam with reprographic facilities. The library is fully- automated via Grandha software. There is an adjacent network resource centre and the computers are INFLIBNET – enabled. All Departments have separate department libraries. Sports infrastructure facilities include a standard multipurpose stadium to house fields for football, cricket, handball and athletics. An art gymnasium is also set at the pavilion structure. The maintenance of curricular, co- curricular and extra- curricular facilities in each department is monitored by a committee led by a senior member of the department. A planning board and a purchase committee are functioning with the intention of fair and smooth management of fund and other related affairs. The IT Club renders common computer facility with a reprographic centre. The major sources of funds are from the Management, PTA, Government (PD, UGC, DST, KSCSTE etc.) and Research Projects from various agencies
About RUSA Project
RUSA – II Project was granted to Mahatma Gandhi College, with a total amount of Rs 20000000 (Two crore rupees) under the scheme infrastructure grants to colleges. Of this Administrative sanction has been received Rs One crore (Rs 10000000/-) for construction of new academic block. The recent proposal is devoted to the construction of a New Academic Block with three ICT enabled classrooms. Moreover, the recent trend is a shift towards inter-disciplinary subjects and hence there is an urgent need to start the art spacious classrooms. The Construction status of New Academic Block is almost 65% - 75% and paid Rs 6198846/- in this respect.
RENOVATION OF OPEN AIR AUDITORIUM (FLOORING & ROOFING)
It has been designed to meet the critical infrastructural needs of the college. The main renovation works in the proposal is to renovate the open-air auditorium. The college has an Open Air Auditorium with a stage. This has been built around 25 years back and requires renovation. It is proposed to construct flooring and roofing for this auditorium, which has a capacity to accommodate the whole students of the college. By providing roofing and flooring to the Open Air Auditorium, the college can conduct programmes with the participation of large number of students, for the benefit of the entire students. Also this gives a tremendous boost to the infrastructure of the college. An amount of Rupees eighty lakhs has been sanctioned for renovation of existing open air auditorium. The Construction status of Open Air Auditorium is almost 50 % - 55 % and paid Rs 4451604/- in this respect.
Physical arrangement of the classroom has the potential to encourage desirable student behaviour. Effective seating pattern encourages students to sit in friendly groups, facilitates free discussion and allows proper monitoring by the Faculty Member. Rupees twenty lakhs sanctioned for the purchase of Pairs of Desk and Benches, Jefferson Chairs with metal frame, LCD Projectors, Bluetooth Microphone with speaker and Reference Books. Purchase is under consideration.
