Mahatma Gandhi University, one of the major Universities in Kerala, is a premier educational institution that strives to fulfill the higher educational needs of the people from Central Kerala. The University was established on 2nd October 1983 and has jurisdiction over the revenue districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. The Institution offers a large number of programmes at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M Phil and Doctoral levels through its 23 University Departments, 2 International and Inter University Centre, 7 Inter University Centres, 10 Inter School Centres, 7 other centres, 31 academic chairs, 77 Govt./Aided Affiliated Colleges, 10 Autonomous Colleges (of which 8 are Colleges with a Potential for Excellence), 200 Unaided Affiliated Colleges and 199 Recognized Research Centres. The University is well known for wide variety of specializations at the Under graduate, Post graduate and Professional programmes through its affiliated colleges keeping pace with industry and market requirements.

About RUSA Project

Projects Under RUSA-I

Campus Wi-Fi and other IT projects
Under this project smart classrooms were installed in 14 Departments.
Campus Beautification
Three projects were taken up for implementation under this category.

a) Renovation and modernization of the kitchen of the student hostel

b) Laying of interlock bricks on the footpath and constructing chain link fencing on both sides of the road leading to student hostel.

c) Road repair and new road construction to professor’s quarters and to senate hall .
Repair, Maintenance and painting of various buildings of the University
Renovation of buildings includes the construction of ramps for the physically challenged students in all the departments, renovation and maintenance of all the building and repainting of all the buildings in the campus.
Installation of Solar Power Plant
In tune with the Government policy of tapping non-conventional energy sources, a 400 kWp solar power plant was set up.
Purchase of lab equipments for the four Science departments
Purchase of Library books for 16 statutory departments
Purchase of Computers for the ongoing E-Governance programme and C-TEX
540 Computers have been purchased and installed for CETEX & e- Governance
Student Amenities and Incubation Centre for Student Entrepreneurship Support and Career Development
The centre is envisaged as a support centre for students in developing entrepreneurial skills and providing tailored support in early stage of the business development.

Projects Under RUSA - II

An amount for ₹50 Crore is sanctioned towards RUSA II Phase Projects.

An amount of ₹15 Cr has been sanctioned for setting up Entrepreneurship, Employability and Career Hub and the remaining ₹35 Cr is for the Research Innovation Project. In connection with Entrepreneurship, Employability and Career Hub, a Special Purpose Vehicle has been registered as a company. Projects for ₹ 35Cr as part of the Research Innovation project have been submitted.
