Newman College- Thodupuzha, named after the great visionary, St. John Henry Newman, is the first higher education institution of Idukki district, established in 1964. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Newman College is a minority Christian institution governed and managed by the Corporate Educational Agency, Diocese of Kothamangalam, Kerala. As a Catholic institution, the college aims to impart academic excellence along with spirituality to the predominantly agrarian societies in the high ranges of Idukki district. The College has a long history of imparting quality education to students, especially those from the economically weaker section of rural and tribal communities of Idukki district. It has now become a hub of globally competent education centre with fifteen undergraduate, eight postgraduate and three doctoral degree programmes in addition to various recognized add-on, diploma and certificate course programmes. The campus and its related student amenities, spread over a total land area of 26 acres has academic extension facilities like Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offering variety of academic programmes at the UG and PG levels, M G University Study Centre offering extra library resources, especially to the research community in the campus, MG University Information Centre providing university services at the College.
The college is recognized by UGC under sections 2(f) and 12 (b) and is reaccredited by the NAAC with ‘A’ grade in two consecutive terms, 2007 and 2016. Considering the consistent quality of the College, UGC selected Newman College as a ‘Mentor institute under UGC Paramarsh scheme’ with a financial support of INR 30 lakh and MHRD, Govt. of India selected it for RUSA’ with a financial support of INR 200 lakh. The infrastructural and enabling facilities for the promotion of science R&D activities in the College was funded by DST, Govt. of India, under FIST programme (INR 90 lakh) and KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala under Selective Augmentation of Research and Development (SARD; INR 32 lakh). The College is one of the few institutions selected for financial assistance under UGC- Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India's Developing Economy (STRIDE) with INR 95 lakh, and DBT Star College Scheme by DBT, Govt. of India with INR 63 lakh. In addition to this, the College receives financial support from Govt. of Kerala for various life skill enhancement and quality assurance programmes like Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP), Walk With the Scholar (WWS), and Scholar Support Programme (SSP). The faculty members from different disciplines have undertaken number of research projects from various Govt. agencies like UGC, DST, CSSR, SERB, KSCSTE etc. The faculty members have an extensive list of publications with more than 190 research papers in international and national journals which include some of the top cited article from India over the last 2 years. In addition, the faculty members have authored/edited 18 books and contributed number chapters to edited books in total. To attain the core values of the College for academic excellence with spiritual vitality and social concern, the institution takes multi-dimensional measures which ensure the quality of all stake holders. Newman College has 55 qualified permanent teaching faculty members and 54 ad hoc faculty and 5 emeritus professors, out of whom 30 have Ph.D. and 11 have M. Phil as their highest qualification. The college also has 40 supporting staff in non-teaching category. The college has 13 approved research guides of MG University from the teaching staff and the three doctoral research centers of the College with a total of 41 registered research scholars pursuing their Ph.D degree. To ensure the quality of students from all learning levels, the College has a robust mentoring, remedial coaching and induction/ bridge course policies which are actively implemented under the supervision of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The digitally enabled campus serves as the platform for innovative teaching methods with student centric activities and peer learning. The student support in different areas is ensured through various cells and forums like Career counselling and Placement cell, IIC, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, NSS, NCC, Debate, Science, Nature, Arts club etc. Ten memorial/endowment lectures are conducted by IQAC every year as a platform for interaction with nationally/globally acclaimed scholars. In addition, every department conducts orientation lectures, subject wise and inter- disciplinary seminars/conferences and invited talks by experts. The compact infrastructure of Newman College with well-maintained and easily accessible student amenities including digitally enabled library, University Study/Information centre, IGNOU study centre, hostel facility, computer labs, digital classrooms, eight seminar halls, theatre, video centre, reprographic shop, indoor stadium, outdoor stadium, basketball court, yoga facility, gymnasium, sky watch facility, church, bank, ATM counter, post office, stationary shop and canteen make it an easily accessible campus. Most of these facilities are open for the public and the indoor stadium hosts several state and national level sports events and caters the need of local sports events as well.
About RUSA Project
The Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is the central government’s contribution to further the promise held by the rich expanse of India’s state universities. The country’s future lies in empowering these campuses with all that it takes to enhance learning, better research and promote innovation. A centrally sponsored scheme, RUSA understands that sometimes the most important lessons of life are learnt outside the classroom. So whether it is upgrading libraries or computer laboratories, promoting autonomous colleges or clubbing them to consolidate their strength and forming cluster universities, this programme realizes that every institution holds the power to enrich lives through top-class education. Kerala State Project Directorate (SPD), oversee the project implementation at the State level. Maintain statistical data and MIS reports. Technically, the Scheme is implemented through consultancy agencies, and college has selected Kerala State Construction Corporation (KSCC) as the Project management consultant (PMC). At the college level, the scheme is overseen by a project implementation committee headed by the principal of the college and members during the initial periods of the scheme include;
The Scheme has three components with 100 plus 40 plus 60 lakh = 200 lakh;
- Construction (100 lakh)
- Renovation of the existing facilities (40 lakh)
- Purchase (60 lakh)
Construction of an extension to the existing administrative building. The plan is construct 3 floors with G+ 3 foundation.
Renovation of laboratory facilities of Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology departments and some common areas of the A- block.
Purchase of a major equipment; Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS- ca. 32 lakh) to the science instrumentation room and computers to the proposed computer laboratory for the regular Commerce Department.
It was initiated during the 2018-2019 academic year and the construction and renovation components are nearly complete.
