Founded in 1965 under the auspices of St. George Forane Church Aruvithura and tucked away on the strands of the river Meenachil, St. George's College is a premier educational institution affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. The college had a humble beginning as a Junior College in 19 July 1965 with five batches of students in the first pre-degree class. It was upgraded to the status of a full-fledged degree college in 1978. The college was included under 2f and 12b of the UGC Act of 1956 . The college was accredited by NAAC at the four-star level in 2000. The NAAC team accredited the college at the A level in 2007. The college was re-accredited at A, the highest level of accreditation, by the NAAC Peer team in 2016. Currently the college offers 17 undergraduate courses, 5 post graduate courses and the Department of Physics and Chemistry were recognized Research Centre of MG University. The college is a premier institution with a sound work-ethic, dedication and reputation for value-based quality education and caters to the educational requirements of the eastern parts of the Meenachil Taluk and the high range sector of Kerala.

Most of the students belong to the less privileged sections of the society. The college has taken great strides in building a nexus with the community. The Community Telecasting Centre (SGC TV) was the major step in this regard which covers 12 nearby Panchayaths . The college is the Swayam-Local Chapter of NPTEL, a joint venture by Ministry of Human Resource Development & various IIT’s. College received DST-FIST grant during 2009 & in 2019. Currently college deals with RUSA project amounting ₹2 Crore ie, new construction & renovation works. Also construction of Library block and Computer Room is to be completed this year.
