St. Michael’s College, Cherthala is a prominent higher education institution on the coastal belt of Alappuzha district catering to the educationally backward fisher-folk and coir workers of the area. From its commencement as a junior college offering pre-degree courses only, it has grown to the status of a postgraduate college offering 9 degree courses, 3 postgraduate courses, 2 PhD programmes and 2 diploma courses. Now the college has been able to establish itself as the most sought-after higher education institution reputed for its discipline and sincerity. It has a sprawling campus of 16 acres lush with greenery and vast enough for further development. The college has already been accredited with A grade by NAAC and is poised for a further leap by induction of more degree and postgraduate programmes. The management of the college and its stakeholders are committed towards making it a hub of education in spite of a host of debilitating conditions.

About RUSA Project

Under the RUSA 2.0 scheme, the college has been sanctioned an amount of Rs. 2 Crores under the scheme; ‘Infrastructure grant to colleges’.The construction work of new classrooms cum examination hall and coaching centre with an allocation of Rs.97.3 lakhs is nearing completion. This centre will be essential to provide adequate working space for the smooth functioning of the college and on completion will be exclusively used for examinations and assembling students for various common coaching programmes. The college has renovated many infrastructural facilities through RUSA project. Two works pertaining to the roof renovation of the Physics Lab wing and Zoology Lab and Museum had been completed. The renovation works in ladies toilet block and those identified for roof plastering and ground flooring are nearing completion. Allocation under renovation head is Rs.82.70 lakhs. The prime objective of the proposal under purchase was procurement of sophisticated equipment for the setting up of research oriented laboratories in the Science departments, sports equipment for Physical education department and to digitalize the college library. The actualization of the present project may not only satisfy the critical infrastructure needs of the college, but also provide a better academic ambience to the entire institution.
