Union Christian College, Aluva

Union Christian College, Aluva was established in 1921 as an ecumenical, Indian Christian initiative in the field of higher education in Kerala. The college was founded by four young visionaries – Shri. K.C. Chacko, Shri. A.M. Varki, Shri. C. P. Mathew and Shri. V. M. Ittyerah, who were alumni of Madras Christian College. Providentially inspired by their Christian faith and commitment, they envisaged the institution as a center based on the values of integrity and social commitment, promoting learning and culture. A sprawling green campus spread over 42.2 acres, the college is located on the banks of river Periyar, about 12 kilometers away from the Cochin International Airport. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, the institution is known for its academic excellence and research potential. The college has 18 academic departments, with around 2600 students and 145 faculty members.

The college has been rated as an ‘A’ Grade institution by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the fourth cycle with 3.45 points. Union Christian College is managed by an association of members drawn from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the Church of South India, and the Inter Church Fellowship (ICF) of the college.

The college is honoured to inherit the proud heritage of accolades and endorsements from the various eminent leaders of the nation who visited the institution in the past.

Mahatma Gandhi visited the college on the 18th of March 1925 and recorded in the visitors’ diary his appreciation for the ideal conditions here.

“Delighted with the ideal situation” – Mahatma Gandhi

The sapling planted by him on the occasion, now a mango tree, is preserved in front of the administrative block as a testimony to the Mahatma’s ideals .

The college was honoured by the visit of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1922, who acknowledged in his address to the community his joy at witnessing here the quintessential spirit of his Shantiniketan. In the same year the college was visited by Lord Irvin, the Viceroy of India then.

About RUSA Project
  • New Construction - Construction of a new Academic Block

As per government guidelines, there has been a marginal increase in student intake across undergraduate and post graduate courses offered by the college. New class rooms are a priority to comfortably accommodate the growing number of students. At present the Proposal under New Construction is exclusively devoted for the construction of a new academic block for the college as the annexure to present Mathew Block. The college has identified an appropriate land area adjacent to present Mathew Block and is easily accessible to all the stake holders including teachers and students. At present the existing infrastructure has been put to use in the best possible manner. However, there is still a shortage of larger classrooms in the existing scenario. An approved architect has visited and physically verified the plot and a detailed report for the construction of a three-storey academic block based on the college requirements provided by the college for class rooms. However, in the present proposal, though the plan is for 3 storey building, estimate has been prepared only for the construction of the ground floor of the building due to the availability of funds sanctioned. In due course the whole building will be constructed with funding from UGC or Management. Construction of an additional academic block will offer a permanent solution to the shifting of students for common classes after each hour especially for UG I and II Year. The abstract of the estimate for the construction prepared by the registered architect is presented below. The plan is for three storied building however only the ground floor will be constructed with the RUSA funding. The excess money I any, will be met by the management.

  • Renovation :

    Academic Buildings (Class rooms)
Most of the buildings are as old as the college itself and require renovation and upgradation to meet quality standards. The Seminar hall and class rooms proposed for renovation have tile roofing. Well-equipped seminar hall and classrooms are also a prerequisite in the coming years to achieve world class standards in higher education. Hence we propose the renovation of the Seminar Hall and Class rooms. More classes can be constructed with other funding’s in the future.
